PANAJI: Minister for Forests Prakash Phadte launched the 52nd Vanamahotsav programme on the campus of Sanjay School, Porvorim. Phadte stressed the need for tree plantation on available land for balanced ecology.

He said Goa, though a tiny state, has 38 per cent forest cover and people are nature lovers and fond of planting more trees. Our Western Ghats have a large species of trees which need proper attention for posterity, he added, and asked the people to supplement the government's efforts in this direction.

Deputy Speaker of the Assembly Ulhas Asnodkar said with the government decision to soon provide adequate water in Porvorim and surrounding areas, the local people will now have the opportunity of planting more trees on barren land.
