BANGALORE / NEW DELHI, June 11 (DHNS) The south-west monsoon, which entered the southernmost parts of the state yesterday, advanced further into coastal areas and south interior parts of the State today. Monsoon activity has reached Uttara Kannada, parts of Shimoga and areas close to Bangalore, according to Meteorological Department Director Dr A L Koppar. But the advancement of monsoon over the land area was tardy compared to its satisfactory movement over the Arabian sea, he observed. The movement of the monsoon over the sea is quite satisfactory. Though the monsoon has reached close to Bangalore, the city is not responding to monsoon activity. However, the city’s weather system may respond to the activity in a couple of days, he observed. Weathermen expressed concern over the monsoon being limited to the coastal areas and not coming to the interior crossing the Western Ghats. Winds are running parallel to the coast and not cutting across. Winds are dragging away cloud concentration from eastern Arabian Sea as a result of which though monsoon has reached up to Goa, its limited to the coast, said an IMD official. Interior areas are getting isolated rainfall as pre-monsoon shower as the circulation pattern has not extended, he said, adding that there was not much rainfall activity on the eastern side of the Western Ghats. Keeping their fingers crossed the weathermen prefer a wait and watch policy at the moment. What raises their apprehensions is the fact that the northeast arm of the monsoon, that entered India before the southern arm, has also not advanced much beyond its initial coverage area. On Monday, the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting expressed concern over the monsoon’s progress after seeing its performance in the first 24 hours, as many places in south Kerala and interior Karnataka did not receive rain. Subdued rainfall activity will be a cause of concern particularly for Karnataka, as water levels in the reservoirs in the Cauvery basin stand at 1.13 per cent of their full storage capacity.ÿ
