MADURAI: A sambhar, which fell into the sea off Tuticorin port, about 140 km from here, has been rescued with minor abrasion and handed over to the forest department, official sources said on Friday.

The animal, spotted in the cargo storing area on Thursday evening, jumped into the sea when it was hounded by stray dogs, according to Central Industrial Security Force and Tuticorin Port Trust officials.

A group of Port Trust's marine department personnel guided the sambhar to the shore.

An enquiry has been ordered into how the sambhar, which normally lived in herds, travelled about 120 km from the western ghats and reached the sea shore.

It was suspected that the animal had been brought for being smuggled to Sri Lanka or some other country along with the cargo, an official said on Friday, adding the sambhar would be shifted to the sanctuary in Tirunelveli district.
