The citizens of Hyderabad are in for a pleasant surprise, come tomorrow morning. Out their waterstarved taps will flow the cool blue waters of the River Krishna. And we have the city’s mayor Teegala Krishna Reddy to thank for this dream come true. It was his efforts that saw a long line of disused tankers parked around the Hussain Sagar pressed into service to ferry water all the way from source of the river in the Western Ghats (Maharashtra) to the city. The Hussain Sagar, to be precise. “Where else can we store so much water – the lake we thought would be the best place,” says water department official. “Besides, we hear the lake has been purified from all the chemicals people have dumped into over the years. All the organisms in the water have been killed and the water is really clean.” The modest mayor of course refused to comment on this tremendous achievement saying it was due to the blessings of the party supremo. |
