Abstract

Abstract: During a two year study on ticks parasitisizing birds of Shimoga District, Mysore State, 8474 birds (184 species) were examined and 1082 birds of 81 species were found to be infested.The genus Haemaphysalis accounted for 99.5% of all ticks collected and the remaining belonged to the genera Dermacenter, Amblyomma, Boophilus and Hyaloma. H.spinigera was the common pest species of Haemaphysalis in bids, closely followed by H.wellingtoni and H.turturis and no evidence of birds bringing into India, ticks not indigenpous to India. The seasonal variations in the infestation by various tick stages and species and the host parasite relationship also discussed.
