ENVIS (ENVironmental Information System) is a decentralized
system with a network
of distributed subject oriented Centres ensuring integration
of national efforts in Environ-
mental Information Collection, Collation, Storage, Retrieval
and Dissemination to all
concerned.
ENVIS is Sponsored and Assisted by the World Bank and Supported
& Co-Ordinated by the
Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF) – Government
of India (GoI), INDIA
Presently the ENVIS network consists of Focal Point at the
Ministry of Environment and
Forests ( MoEF ) and ENVIS Centres setup in different organizations
/ establishments in
INDIA in selected areas of environment. These Centres have
been set up in the areas of
pollution control, toxic chemicals, central and offshore ecology,
environmentally sound
and appropriate technology, bio-degradation of wastes and
environment management, etc.
The proposed project under EMCB –
ENVIS NODE is to effectively bring out various
environmental management methodologies for the control of
vectors and vector borne
diseases through integrated system and disseminate to various
end users like Post-
Graduate Students of Environmental Sciences, Health Officials,
NGOs etc.
This is first of its kind to have a centre exclusively for
information dissemination on
Bioinformatics-Vector Control
and Vector Borne Diseases.

Objectives:
Development of database on various ecological niches responsible
for breeding of
vector
species with special reference to water quality.
Development of a Web-based software on identification of vector
species with special
reference
to habitats by using expert system, text, graphics etc.,
Development of a Database on environmental and cultural methods
for vector control
in Paddy
fields. The study includes development of various databases
like micro and
macro
breeding habitats, surveillance with special reference to
ecological parameters
like percentage
of organic matter, factors influencing the emergence etc.,
Development of Database on ecological parameters affecting
the dispersal and
distribution
of the vector species.
Organization of one or two day work shop on Role of Information
System in Environ-
mental
Management for the vector control and Vector borne diseases
(EMVCVBD)
Conducting Training program for the postgraduates in Environmental
Sciences and
Computer
Sciences, Social Sciences on the prospectus of Information
Technology in
EMVCVBD.
