This person will lead our work to bring sound science to bear on building support for strong state and regional climate policies in the Northeast. The person in this position will carry out related scientific, outreach policy, and media activities in support of UCS's Climate Solutions Campaign. Nancy Cole SSI Project Manager ssi@ucsusa.org ******************************************************** Senior Staff Scientist/Northeast Climate Project Manager Responsibilities: Lead project to develop, produce, and effectively communicate the results of a multidisciplinary assessment of projected impacts of climate change on the Northeast U.S. Manage all aspects of the project, including: * Developing region-specific climate projections based on the latest global climate models * Identifying the climate-sensitive issues and sectors on which to focus the assessment, taking into account both strategic and scientific considerations * Developing and managing a team of independent, collaborating experts from universities and research institutions across the region in the research, writing, publication, and outreach components of this project. * Exploring and possibly establishing formal or informal partnerships with other institutions. * Developing and guiding strong report production, release and outreach plans. * Crafting proposals and reports for foundations in coordination with UCS development staff. Establish and maintain strong working relationships with relevant experts in academic, NGO government and other institutions to exchange information, share resources, and generally strengthen UCS's leadership role on climate science and policy in the Northeast. Identify and develop opportunities to motivate others to use current state-of- the-art climate projections to develop additional impacts case studies. Oversee and ensure high quality and effective coordination and integration of technical, outreach and policy aspects of Northeast climate work within the Global Environment Program, including scientist outreach through the Sound Science Initiative. Hold regular meetings as appropriate with relevant staff and in coordination with other relevant programs. Ensure effective communication and coordination of this work with other components of the UCS Climate Solutions Campaign. Develop and ensure accuracy, credibility, accessibility and timeliness of written products, including but not limited to UCS reports, popular articles, Sound Science Initiative updates and alerts, web pages and/or other materials for publication. Serve as spokesperson on climate science and impacts in the Northeast for media, public, scientific and policy forums. Support and strengthen visibility and leadership opportunities for senior UCS staff on Northeast climate science and policy. Coordinate work of UCS climate science team to maintain effective communication, share resources and information, and ensure high-quality, up-to-date and effectively represented climate science information on the UCS website, reports, press releases, other products. Maintain knowledge of scientific developments, trends, and policy developments on key issues relevant to UCS work on climate change impacts and other key aspects of global environmental change. Qualifications: Position requires in-depth knowledge of climate science, including the ecological and/or societal impacts of climate change, generally acquired through completion of a doctoral program in a relevant field. Position requires excellent project management skills, and a demonstrable ability to understand the public policy aspects of climate change and the role of technical analyses and advocacy in shaping public opinion and policy debates. The position also requires strong public speaking skills, a demonstrable ability to write for non-technical audiences, and the ability to work independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team. Experience: Work requires a strong background in climate or related global change science and at least seven years of progressively responsible related experience. Demonstrable experience in managing multidisciplinary collaborative research projects and in communicating science to non- specialists is required. Supervisory experience is highly desirable. Up to one year of on-the-job training may be necessary to become familiar with UCS organization, philosophy, programs, and constituencies. Experience working on Northeast science and policy issues is desirable. Position details: This position will be based in UCS's Cambridge office. Salary is commensurate with training and experience.
