From foo@SWIPNET.SE Wed Sep 20 19:31:16 2000 Date: Thu, 14 Sep 2000 13:42:14 +0200 From: Jacky FooReply-To: "IBSnet: General Forum on Integrated Bio-Systems" To: ET-W1@SEGATE.SUNET.SE Subject: [IBS-GEN] call for proposals - FMFA [ The following text is in the "iso-8859-1" character set. ] [ Your display is set for the "US-ASCII" character set. ] [ Some characters may be displayed incorrectly. ] On Aug 30, I shared the announcement from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs (for countries listed in the French Priority Solidarity Zone http://www.france.diplomatie.fr/cooperation/zsp/zsp00.html) for research and pilot projects on two themes (1. Sustainable Management of Solid Urban Waste and 2. Sustainable Management of Wastewater and Excreta Disposal) with the hope that IBSnet members could benefit from it. The total programme budget is FFR 5 million (EUR ..) for 6-8 pilot projects and 10-12 research projects. Closing date: 15 Oct 2000 (northern organizations), 25 Oct 2000 (southern organizations). I have received responses from (a) Vicente Contreras (b) Le Thanh Binh [ltbinh@ifs-ibt.ac.vn] (c) Luis F. Diaz [ludiaz@calrecovery.com] (d) Raheem Kolawole [raheem@CC.JYU.FI] (country in Africa- ?) Please note that the project (research or pilot) can be in Ghana, Nigéria, Sénégal, Vietnam but unfortunately excludes Pago Pago (American Samoa) and Venezuela. However I hope we can involve Vicente Contreras and Luis Diaz for their advice or as consultants. Also note that the proposals must be supported by a team that brings together different types of stakeholders, especially local authorities. Based on the responses, our opportunity for project proposals are for Vietnam (Hanoi) and West Africa. Ghana, in particular, is of special interest to me because of the United Nations University Research and Training Center on Natural Resources. Status: I have not received any project proposals from Raheem Kolawole nor from Le Thanh Binh. In view of the deadline of Oct 25th, I have a proposal for a pilot project and for your consideration. This proposal involves the diversion of biodegradables from landfills to the project site for vermicomposting (products: earthworms and compost), use of a wastewater(s) (ideally from an agro-industry that does not use toxic chemicals) or sewage for biogas production and treatment, digested slurry for aquatic weed production and treated wastewater for fish production. Such an IBS would produce earthworms and aquatic weeds as animal feed, compost (for sale and/or use at site), fish (as food or as feed; depending on the type of fish) and thus also contribute to both socio-economic development and waste management and treatment. We need to find a site which ideally should be at or near the resources (wastewater and solid biodegradables). If any of you can identify such a site in any of the FPSZ countries and has local contacts (NGO, Govt and research inst.), please let me know quickly so that we can proceed to establishing contacts with the local organizations. regards Jacky Foo Coordinator-IBSnet Integrated Bio-Systems Network http://www.ias.unu.edu/proceedings/icibs/ibs/ibsnet http://segate.sunet.se/archives/et-w1.html
