Solar Power in the Real World

[arnoharrisprevalentT.jpg]
By Arno Harris

Let’s start with some facts. Over the last 15 years or so, solar
photovoltaic (PV) power installations have been growing at a respectable
rate of 25 to 30 percent per year worldwide. But, the global growth
statistics mask a compelling domestic growth trend.

PV installations in the U.S. have grown by leaps and bounds in the last
two years. Most estimates suggest that the domestic PV market is growing
at 60 percent per year. Further, the share of those installations that
are grid-connected has grown from just a small fraction to almost
two-thirds of all domestic installations.

A Solar Manifesto
Publisher: James & James (Science Publishers) Ltd.
Author: Hermann Scheer
Published: May 2001
Book Details
Price: US$45.00

In the decade since the "Earth Summit" in Rio de Janiero, the response of
the world's governments and authorities to the threats to the global
environment has been to enforce the reduction of energy consumption and
harmful emissions - solutions primarily based around conventional energy
resources and conventional thinking. The question is, though, whether
this strategy is radical enough to address the key challenges now facing
the environment, and whether it can be effective in avoiding catastrophe
on a global scale.
