Date: Thu, 15 Jul 1999 13:15:53 -0500 From: David LoweSubject: Earthwatch grant deadlines loom for 2000 support The Center for Field Research and Earthwatch Institute announce TWO opportunities for scientific research support through the Earthwatch model of participant-funding: * CENTER FOR FIELD RESEARCH GRANTS http://www.earthwatch.org/cfr/cfr.html - Field grants ranging from $10,000 - 130,000 per year using 20 or more volunteers per year over multiple 7-16 day teams (grant level varies with number of volunteers used) * STUDENT CHALLENGE AWARDS PROGRAM GRANTS http://www.earthwatch.org/cfr/CFRdurfee.html - Grants range from $6,000 to $15,000, supporting a single two-three week team of six-eight high school aged scholarship recipients. These students are identified through a nation-wide selection process. Please share the following announcements with your colleagues in time for July and August review of proposals for Year 2000 support. =3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D= -=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D-=3D CENTER FOR FIELD RESEARCH GRANTS The Center for Field Research (CFR) is currently reviewing proposals for Earthwatch field grants for multi-year studies in the biological, physical, and social sciences. Long-term and multi-disciplinary studies are encouraged. Projects may be fielded in any country where it is safe and feasible to involve international volunteers. Well-educated and highly motivated non-specialist volunteers serve as data collectors and field assistants. Volunteers=92 participation fees generate research grants averaging $20,000 per year. At least 20 volunteers must be employed, spread throughout the year, typically on 3 to 5 teams of 7-16 days each. Grants cover the costs of maintaining volunteers and research staff in the field and often covers other project expenses (except leaders=92 salaries, capital equipment, and overhead). Applying for EarthWatch Institute/ CFR grants is a two-stage process, starting with a preliminary proposal. CFR Preliminary proposal forms must be received by July 30, 1999 for consideration in year 2000 (one year lead time). If accepted, a full proposal would be needed by August 20, 1999, so please apply early! Please use the two-page CFR form. Award winners have demonstrated talent in the arts and humanities and interests that bridge the arts and sciences. They are selected from high schools across the United States and work with scientists at observatories, research laboratories, or Field Stations in North America, The Caribbean, or Costa Rica. Scientists supported through this program work with a single team of six to eight students, for a period of two to three weeks. Project budgets are covered by grants of $6,000 to $15,000. September 1, 1999 is the proposal deadline for SCAP projects fielded in the summer of 2000.
