JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
15 July 1998

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH SCIENTIST
ECOLOGY

The Academy of Natural Sciences' Estuarine Research Center invites
applications for a postdoctoral researcher with strong experience in
modeling and/or complex statistical analyses. We are seeking a recent
PhD with interest in applying ecological theory to environmental issues
and examining the relationship between ecological complexity and the
response of systems to natural and anthropogenic perturbations. The
postdoc will participate in COASTES, a large multi-investigator program
funded by NOAA-Coastal Ocean Program: "The Importance of Understanding
Ecological Complexity to Predicting Effects of Multiple Stressors on
Coastal Systems". The study focuses on the Patuxent River, a subestuary
of the Chesapeake Bay, and includes mesocosm experiments, small-scale
laboratory experiments, large-scale field experiments and modeling.
Research experience in freshwater, estuarine or marine systems is
strongly preferred, and a desire to collaborate with a diverse group of
colleagues is required. The position will include investigator
(postdoc)- initiated modeling and statistical exploration using
experiment and field data and/or theory-based modeling techniques, as
well as collaboration with COASTES PIs in analyses of project datasets.
The opportunity also exists for the successful candidate to interact
with COASTES PIs focusing on watershed processes and economics. However,
we are not currently seeking a researcher to pursue studies in those
areas.

The position is available fall 1998 and will be filled no later than 1
January 1999. The initial appointment will be for 1 year, but a 2 year
duration is anticipated. Degree requirements must be completed prior to
the start of the appointment. The Academy of Natural Sciences is a non-
profit research/museum/education institution with headquarters in
Philadelphia. The Estuarine Research Center has recently relocated to a
new facility in St. Leonard, MD (approximately 50 miles SE of
Washington, DC and 15 miles N of Solomons, MD). The Academy is an equal
opportunity/affirmative action employer offering a competitive salary
and a comprehensive benefits package.

Candidates should forward a letter stating their research interests and
experience, a copy of their CV, and the names, addresses and phone
numbers of three references by Aug. 20 to:
