Project Description for EARTH SCIENCES INTERN -- West Trenton, New Jersey -- Project Number 000688 DESCRIPTION/TITLE OF PROJECT: The USGS West Trenton office conducts numerous hydrologic investigations. These investigations each have significant field components which include the collection and processing of data. The intern, as part of the Toxic Sediment Project Team in the Environmental Studies Program, will assist in the collection of numerous types of hydrologic and water-quality data. The intern will organize and collate data by putting them in an interpretable format and entering them into appropriate USGS data bases. The intern will receive training in specific methods of collection. DEADLINE TO APPLY: October 16, 1998 OBJECTIVES: To provide an opportunity to learn state-of-the-art techniques in surface-water data collection and water-quality and sediment sampling. To provide real-world experiences in working with a highly experienced and diversified scientific team. To provide on-the-job training in various data management and interpretive tools. SPECIFIC TASKS: 1. Assist in the collection of surface-water flow, water-quality, and sediment data.2. Assist in the installation and maintenance of surface-water sampling stations.3. Assist in the organization, and collation of data, use of appropriate USGS data bases. BENEFIT: Intern will learn state-of-the-art surface-water, water-quality and sediment data collection techniques; will gain significant on-the-job experience and responsibilities that will develop both teamwork and leadership skills. Intern will be trained to use various data management and interpretive tools. DURATION: 1 year, possibly extendible to 2 years (Probable start date of mid to late-November, 1998) LOCATION: West Trenton, New Jersey SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Applicants must have completed at least 120 semester hours of academic study or a Bachelor*s degree in geology, a related science (such as chemistry, environmental science), or civil engineering, preferably with coursework in hydrology, hydrogeology, or aquatic chemistry. Basic understanding of hydrologic principles and the use of computers is needed. ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS DESIRABLE BUT NOT REQUIRED: Experience in conducting environmental field work is desirable, including collecting surface-water samples from streams and rivers. Familiarity with data loggers or Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a plus. STIPEND: Determined by academic level of selected intern. $22,065 per year (four full years of academic study); $26,265 per year (bachelor*s degree with GPA of 2.9 on 4.0 scale OR 30 semester hours of graduate school). OVERTIME: Overtime is estimated for the purpose of data gathering or field work, *field party* experiences for extended number of days, and day trips away from site requiring extended hours in excess of 8 hours.
