Subject: Genetic Ecology Tech Job

Full-time position available: Biology and Environmental Science Technician

We have an immediate opening for an EPA-funded Biological Technicianship in
Plant Genetics at the Louisiana Environmental Research Center, McNeese State
University. Minimum requirements include a Bachelor's Degree in Biology,
Environmental Science, or a related field. Funding for this position is
available through August 31, 2000, with the possibility extension. The
ideal candidate will be expected to assist in the design and execution of
experiments to determine genetic variability in salt marsh plant populations
threatened by environmental contaminants. Both field and laboratory
experience are essential; a working knowledge of coastal wetland ecology is
highly desirable. Limited computer skills are also required; i.e., the
ability to use a word processor and a spreadsheet. Field work will consist
of identifying and sampling various plant populations in coastal
southwestern Louisiana. The technician will extract DNA from sample leaf
material, and will assist in the use of various PCR-based techniques such as
RAPDs (random amplification of polymorphic DNA) and AFLPs (amplified
fragment length polymorphisms).

For further information contact Drs. Robin Lowenfeld, Steve Travis (318
475-5257) or Ed Proffitt (318 475-3062).

Application should include a letter of interest, resume and names and phone
numbers of three references. Send to Dr. Thomas Wheeler, McNeese State
University, P.O. Box 90655, Lake Charles, LA 70609 or call 1-800-622-3352

SCIENCES INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

PLEASE NOTE:
Application is restricted to students who have
not been out of school for more than one year.
Non-citizens are eligible only if they have
attended or graduated from a U.S. college or
university during the past year. (U.S. citizens
attending foreign schools are eligible for the
program). Current or former employees of the
U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) are not
eligible. Oak Ridge Associated Universities

description.

Project Description for
EARTH SCIENCES INTERN -- Menlo Park,
California -- Project Number 000648

DESCRIPTION/TITLE OF PROJECT: The U.S.
Geological Survey is conducting research to
better understand the transport of sediment
and pollutants along the continental margin
offshore Los Angeles, California. This
research includes the acquisition of large
quantities of available geologic,
environmental, oceanographic, and biologic
data; the acquisition of new data through
marine operations and laboratory analysis;
and the synthesis and analysis of these data
within the context of a geographic
information system. A goal of these studies
is to provide the public with a better image
of the nature of pollution in the seabed near
Los Angeles and to provide a database
through which policy makers can make
decisions regarding future activities that
might impact the Southern California marine
environment,

DEADLINE TO APPLY: May 26, 1998

OBJECTIVES: The objective of the internship
is to manage our Los Angeles offshore
sediment and pollutant database and to
manipulate these data within the context of a
geographic information system. A
secondary objective is to participate in the
acquisition of new data through
oceanographic field work (e.g., sediment
sampling and seismic-reflection profiling)
and limited laboratory studies.

SPECIFIC TASKS:
1. Maintain and expand a database of
existing geologic, oceanographic, and
environmental data for the continental
margin offshore Los Angeles, California.
2. Incorporate new data acquired by the
USGS and its collaborators into the
database.
3. Synthesize and plot data using such
Macintosh applications as Excel and
Kalidagraph.
4. Enter the data into a GIS (ArcInfo) and
develop GIS products. Develop new GIS
coverages.
5. Possibly work in sediment laboratory
conducting routine analyses such as
sediment textural and carbon/carbonate
analyses.
6. Participation in marine sediment
sampling cruises.

BENEFIT: The project will benefit the intern
by providing an opportunity to (1) improve
database management skills, (2) participate
in a large multidisciplinary project to
investigate the processes of sediment and
pollutant transport in the submarine
environment, and (3) improve the intern=s
ability to use GIS applications to evaluate
geologic processes. The project will
enhance the intern=s ability to work
independently and meet project goals and
deadlines.

DURATION: Twelve months, extendible to
two years

LOCATION: Menlo Park, California
SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Bachelor=s degree with GPA of 2.9 or above
on 4.0 scale or 30 hours of graduate credit
in geology, environmental science, or
computer science. Completion of the
master*s degree in the same disciplines
qualifies for the higher stipend. Experience
using personal computers, preferably
Macintosh-based. Experience with
Geographic Information Systems, preferably
using ArcInfo. Ability to carefully record
geographic and geologic data and maintain a
computer database of recorded information.
Ability to work independently following
periodic discussions of project objectives
with senior (Ph.D.) level scientists.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS DESIRABLE:
1. Knowledge of marine sedimentation
processes.
2. Knowledge of marine ecology and
environmental science.
3. Knowledge of sediment laboratory
techniques.

OVERTIME: Data gathering onboard
research vessels or fieldwork away from site
for an extended number of days.

STIPEND: $25,625 per year or $31,775 per
year determined by academic qualifications

An applicant interested in an internship
should submit the following application
materials:

Resume
