POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT:  ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM OFFICER
Charles Stewart Mott Foundation


The C. S. Mott Foundation's Environment program has an immediate opening
for a
program officer to work on grantmaking addressing Conservation of
Freshwater
Ecosystems in North America, with emphasis on the binational Great Lakes
basin
and selected ecoregions in the southeastern U.S.  The Foundation's
grantmaking
under this program area emphasizes support for site-specific
conservation
efforts, strengthening environmental nongovernmental organizations
(NGOs)
dedicated to the long-term conservation of freshwater ecosystems, and
influencing the design and implementation of selected public policies.

The individual filling this position will work in partnership with
another
program officer to manage grantmaking on freshwater ecosystem
conservation.
S/he will be part of a six-person team working on international and
domestic
environmental issues.  The Mott Foundation made 114 environmental grants
in
1998, totaling nearly $12.5 million.

Primary responsibilities of the program officer will include:  working
with
another program officer on the team to design effective grantmaking
strategies,
consistent with objectives approved by the Foundation's Trustees;
investigating
grant requests and developing funding recommendations; monitoring and
evaluating
individual grants and clusters of grants; preparing, individually and
with other
team members, reports and documents for the Foundation's management and
Trustees; and, on occasion, supervising consultants.

The successful candidate will:

- possess excellent analytical, writing, and interpersonal communication
skills;
- have at least seven years experience working on relevant environmental
issues;
- be committed to advancing the successful and strategic involvement of
NGOs in
freshwater ecosystem conservation;
- have a strong interest in working collaboratively and respectfully
with
established and emerging NGO leaders;
- have prior experience in thinking creatively and strategically about
how to
direct limited resources to leverage change;
- be willing to conduct extensive travel; and
- be flexible and have a strong interest in working as a member of a
team.

A bachelor's degree is required; graduate training is preferred.
Previous
grantmaking experience, or experience with foundations, is desirable, as
is
experience in the nonprofit sector and with public policy.  A background
in
science and/or applied conservation work is useful, although not
necessary.

            POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE
                     UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA

      DEVELOPMENT OF AN ADAPTIVE MANAGEMENT PROTOCOL
                        FOR  AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS

A postdoctoral research associate position for up to 2 years is
available for advanced quantitative research leading to the
development of methods for the optimal management of
American black duck populations. The successful candidate will
work with an international team of researchers and resource
managers to develop and evaluate an integrated modeling,
monitoring and decision support program appropriate to
international, coordinated management of this resource.

Qualifications: Candidate must possess an earned doctorate
degree in natural resource management, ecology, statistics,
operations research, or a related field; a background combining
natural resource management with advanced quantitative skills
is particularly desirable.  Special consideration will be given to
candidates possessing knowledge and skills in dynamic
optimization, mathematical modeling, and statistical inference.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, and an ability to
work in a team situation, are absolutely required.

Salary:  $30,000- $40,000 per year plus benefits,  depending on
the specific qualifications of the candidate.

Location: Principal work station will be the Patuxent Wildlife
Research Center in Laurel, MD.  Frequent travel will be required
between Laurel and Athens, GA and meeting sites elsewhere in
the U.S. and Canada; expenses while on travel will be covered by
the project.
