Subject: Highly Cool New England Aquarium Job

I have no idea if this is still open; it's still on their website, which =
is usually a good sign (they're good about updating it). But even if =
this spot is taken it sounds like they might need assistants or other =
helpers and, note, they'll take a Master's person. Pass it on with the =
caveat that it might be filled. Kate

Full-time regular position

Principal Investigator for exhibit on Aquatic Biodiversity
Available Immediately

The New England Aquarium, located on Central Wharf in Boston, in =
partnership with the Harvard University Museum of Comparative Zoology, =
is preparing a proposal to NSF for an exhibit on Aquatic Biodiversity =
(working title) to open in its new West Wing in 2002. The Aquarium's =
goal is to raise public awareness of this vital topic, an awareness that =
leads to caring and action. No other institution in the world has =
undertaken to focus on aquatic biodiversity as a major topic for the =
general public--yet the vast majority of the world's species live in =
fresh- and saltwater habitats. Rarely does an opportunity arise either =
to reach so many with material of such vital importance, or to break new =
ground in the world of public programming.

This major endeavor requires the mind, heart, and skills of a unique =
individual who wants to work for a four- to five-year period in an =
exciting, lively, challenging institution committed to bringing =
important scientific and conservation messages to the general public in =
ways that are fun, engaging, and truthful.

The Principal Investigator for a major two-year exhibit on Aquatic =
Biodiversity at the New England Aquarium will work with a team of =
exhibit designers, educators, and animal biologists at the New England =
Aquarium, and with staff of the Museum of Comparative Zoology, on the =
following responsibilities:=20

Development of exhibit concept and scientific/intellectual content, =
ensuring the accuracy of the latter=20
Development of a strong partnership with MCZ that results in a companion =
exhibit and
programs both at the Museum's location and in collaborative education =
programs at the Aquarium.=20
Preparation of a proposal to be submitted to the National Science =
Foundation in early
November 1998.=20
Creation of an exhibit that expresses the concept and content in ways =
accessible to the Aquarium's audience of 1.3 million visitors. =
Supervision of development of a range of related activities, including =
education programs for schools and the general public, books, CD-Roms, =
lectures, and media projects. Oversight of exhibit implementation, =
working with a project manager, content developers, and design team in =
the Aquarium, to ensure that exhibit messages are effectively translated =
into the product. Oversight of budget, working with director of =
sponsored research.=20

The Principal Investigator would ideally hold a PhD or its equivalent =
in a field related to aquatic biodiversity. A minimum of an M.S. degree =
in an appropriate field is required. Other qualifications include the =
desire and ability to communicate scientific ideas to the public, =
ability to absorb and synthesize complex ideas that result in themes and =
programs for a public exhibit, ability to draw on the expertise of the =
scientific community in areas where PI is less knowledgeable, strong =
experience in working as a team leader, ability to write cleary and =
concisely.=20

The position is available immediately. Once the proposal is submitted, =
the individual will devote some of his/her time to the development and =
execution of other projects and programs.
