            GENERAL INFORMATION about ICAN

The ICAN was founded in 1994 as a non-profit organization that facilitates
communication among individuals and institutions concerned with research,
education and conservation of forest canopies. The seven-member Board of
Directors represent the constitue nt fields of research, education,
conservation, and arboriculture. ICAN is a self-supported organization,
funded by membership dues, donations, and grants.

Some of the current core activities of the ICAN include facilitation of an
electronic mail bulletin board (subscribership of ca. 350 in over 60
countries), circulation of the quarterly newsletter (titled "What's Up?"),
organization of scientific symposia and meetings, maintenance of a
citations bibliographic database on scientific and popular aspects of
canopy studies, development of a canopy curriculum for middle school
students, and distribution of a canopy researcher directory. ICAN members
also contr ibute to disseminating scientifically sound information to the
popular media for magazines, television, and films.

A children's program called "Ask Dr. Canopy!" was established in 1995. It
provides a pathway for kids who have questions about the canopy and how to
get involved with canopy research and conservation to communicate directly
with canopy researchers, via em ail and letters. Other ICAN activities
planned for the future include the initiation of an images library (slides
and film) and serving as a repository for information on safe access and
canopy sampling methods.

                    ICAN EMAIL BULLETIN BOARD

The International Canopy Network's (ICAN) e-mail bulletin board is an open
discussion list which encourages participation from a wide range of users.
The bulletin board serves as an opportunity for researchers, educators,
and conservationist to discuss the many concepts, perspectives, and
objectives associated with forest canopies. Our hope is that the bulletin
board will help create links among canopy enthusiasts and professionals,
help support the organization of symposia and meetings, and help ICAN
maintain an up-to-date bibliographic database of articles pertaining to
forest canopies. We encourage everyone to participate as fully as
possible, however, we ask you to not use the bulletin board for profit
motivated advertisements. You can also check out ICAN on the World Wide
Web at <http://esnet.edu/ican.ca/~jwalkerr/tech/ctc605.htmt-archive/msg04946.html>
