It seems so. The Eyptian State Information Service on July 7 th, 1997, under the title "Toshka ... new Civilisation in the making, says FAO" ------------------- The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) stressed the feasibility and importance of implementing the Toshka project in the New Valley to achieve development leap in southern Egypt. The FAO mission for studying the project issued a report yesterday saying that Egypt can cultivate 3.5 million feddans after reclaiming land in the New Delta. The FAO mission toured the project site between May 5 and 7. The report said Toshka canal can irrigate 2.5 million feddans while underground water can irrigate one million feddans in addition to 200,000 feddans east of the EL-Ewainat region. The FAO also pointed out that Toshka project will help settle six million citizens in the New Valley region and will create new urban communities. The report included crops that could be cultivated in the region, topped by wheat. It also called for solving problems facing the project, including marketing of agricultural products currently cultivated in the region, because of transportation difficulties. -------------------- The full text of the article can be seen at http://www.uk.sis.gov.eg/online/html/ol0707b.htmist-archive/ I have posted a request for information on infoterra dated April 10. Unfortunately, I received no response from FAO. The Toshka project requires 5.5 BCM of Nile water of which Egypt has none according to studies by such agencies as the World Bank concerning another land reclamation project called Northern Sinai Agricultural Development Program (NSADP). Details can be found at: http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/Senate/2908/st-archive/ Can please someone provide information on the feasibility of the Toshka project with stress on water resources? Where can the original FAO report be found? - message sent by infoterra@cedar.univie.ac.at to signoff from the list, send an email to majordomo@cedar.univie.ac.at the message body should read unsubscribe infoterra your@email.address -
