International Course in Conservation Biology and Wildlife Management in =
Assam, India

Course Sites and Dates:
The above-mentioned course will be conducted from 24 November to 22 =
December 1999, under the sponsorship of the Smithsonian Institution's =
Wildlife Conservation  and Management Training Program (WCMTP) and the =
Aaranayak Nature Club, Assam. It will be held at Guwahati, the capital of =
Assam. and at a field site in Tezpur, which is about four hours by road =
from Guwahati. Course participants will also visit Kaziranga, Orang and =
Nameri National Parks, all of  which are located close to Tezpur. =
Kaziranga and  Orang National Parks consist mainly of riverine and =
grassland vegetation and are best known for their rhino, tiger and deer =
populations. Nameri National Park is situated along the foothills of the =
eastern Himalayas, and its forest habitat is home to elephants, tigers, =
wild dogs, gaur, bear and numerous bird species. Visits to these parks =
will provide excellent opportunities to observe wildlife, and to gain =
first-hand knowledge of issues related to the conservation and management =
of biological diversity..=20

Course Costs:
The course fee is $1150 excluding airfare and  health insurance. The fee =
will cover all expenses for  tuition, food, accommodation, use of teaching =
facilities, local travel, course supplies and special events during the =
course. All applicants must include letters confirming financial support =
with their applications.=20

Eligibility and Application:
The course is most appropriate for those interested  in conservation =
biology, animal ecology and behavior, biodiversity inventory and monitoring=
 techniques and protected areas management. University students and =
graduates  from developed countries and wildlife personnel from developing =
country government agencies, non-governmental organizations and universitie=
s are eligible to apply for the course. The attached application form must =
be completed in full and submitted with all other application materials =
requested. Those who applied for WCMTP's previous courses  should confirm =
their interest in attending the course in Assam, and also update their =
applications if necessary.=20

Only 20 applicants will be selected for the course and preference will be =
given to those who apply early. Successful applicants will be notified of =
their selection in mid September 1999.
