History. Contact: The American Museum of Natural History; Tel:
+1-212-769-5100. The report summarizes the information and ideas
generated at the 1995 conference, The Living Planet in Crisis:
Biodiversity, Science, and Policy, and reflects subsequent discussions
at the American Museum of Natural History. The conference, the first to
be sponsored by the Museum's Center for Biodiversity and Conservation,
generated discussion along several themes: the extent and range of
biodiversity, its role in sustaining ecological services valuable to
humans, accelerating rates of depletion and the need for conservation
measures.

BIODIVERSITY AND HUMAN HEALTH (1997). Edited by Francesca Grifo and
Joshua Rosenthal. Contact: Island Press Order Department; Box 7, 24850

on the global environment and biomedicine to explore the human health
consequences of the loss of biological diversity. Based on a two-day
conference sponsored by the National Institute of Health, the National
Science Foundation, and the Smithsonian Institution, the book opens a
dialogue among experts from the fields of public health, biology,
epidemiology, botany, ecology, demography, and pharmacology on this
vital but often neglected concern.

been focused on the environmental implications of biodiversity loss, the
guide summarizes for policymakers the profound consequences for human
health that include threats to global supplies of food and fresh water,
exposure to formerly rare diseases and opportunistic infections, as well
as loss of major sources of medicines for treating illness of all kinds.
