Dear Friends,

National Institute of Hydrology, Roorkee (Uttaranchal, India) and Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology, Udaipur (Rajasthan, India) are organising a National Seminar on Hydrological Aspects of Rejuvenation of Urban Lakes (HARUL-2005) during 20-21 October, 2005 at Udaipur (Rajasthan), India.

Objectives:

The main objectives of the National Seminar are

(a) To provide a forum for planners, policy makers, engineers, scientists, academicians etc to meet  and  discuss the various hydrological aspects of lake  conservation, management, rejuvenation and related issues.

(b) To present and share the research findings and to disseminate knowledge hitherto gathered about new techniques, methodologies and instrumentation etc. required for lake conservation,  management and rejuvenation.

(c) To give impetus to coordinated lake hydrological research in India by providing platform for technical interaction

(d) To come out with practical workable and useful recommendation for rejuvenating lakes in urban areas. 

Themes:

1. Basic hydrological and  limnological  processes in lake ecosystems 
2. Lake water quality problems: monitoring, assessment and remediation
3. New technologies, instrumentation and methodologies including remote sensing,  GIS,  modelling and decision support systems  
4. Impact of human interference and  land use changes on lake ecosystems  including sedimentation
5. Management, conservation and rejuvenation strategies for  lakes
6. Peoples participation in lake conservation 

Dates and Venue:

The Seminar is proposed to be held at the premises of the Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology, Udaipur (Rajasthan)  during October 20-21, 2005. It is proposed to organize a field visit to Lake Pichhola and nearby sites on 22nd October. 

For Whom?

The Seminar is intended for engineers, officers, scientists, research scholars,  managers, bureaucrats and policy makers  of  various organizations related to Water Resources, Environment, Irrigation, Public Health Engineering,  Water  Conservation, Forest, Water Pollution Control, Limnology, Remote Sensing Organizations, Academic Institutions,  Municipal Corporations, Lake Control Authority and other related departments of the central and state governments, non-governmental organizations (NGO) and all other  agencies concerned with protection and development of lakes. 

Call for Abstracts:

Authors intending to present  papers are invited to submit abstracts of about 300 words for studies falling under  any of the above mentioned themes. The abstract should include, besides the problem being studied, atleast a paragraph pertaining to  some preliminary results and conclusions. The theme under which the intended paper should be discussed at the Seminar, should be clearly indicated. As far as possible the abstract should be submitted electronically, with HARUL-2005 as the subject of the e-mail. Abstracts must have the full title to be used in the Final Paper and must include the name(s), affiliation, mailing address, telephone, e-mail and fax numbers. The abstracts should be typed in one and half space in English and sent to the Convener, National Seminar on 
"Hydrological Aspects of  Rejuvenation of Urban Lakes" not later than June 15, 2005. The authors whose papers are selected for presentation and inclusion in the proceedings shall be intimated by June 30, 2005. Acceptance of the paper(s) will be based on the abstracts submitted and will be subject to the submission of full length paper, which must be presented  at the Seminar. The full length paper with two hard copies along with CD/Soft Copy should  be sent latest by August 30, 2005.

Acceptance of full length paper : Sept. 15,   2005

Registration Fee:

1. Delegates    Rs.  1000.00
2. Accompanying-guest  Rs.   300.00

The registration fee includes registration material, seminar lunches, teas and dinners. The accompanying guests will have access to all the technical programmes and  meals.  The payment of registration fee should be made by account payee demand draft drawn in favour of "HARUL-2005" and payable at Roorkee. 

Accommodation and Travel:

Special arrangements would be made to accommodate the delegates in Govt. Guest Houses on first come first serve basis on nominal charges. Interested delegates requiring accommodation should clearly  mention their requirement in the registration form.  All the delegates will have to make their own travel arrangements.

Also known as "City of Lakes and Palaces", Udaipur is considered to be the most picturesque city of Rajasthan. It was established at the bank of Lake Pichhola by Maharana Udai Singh. With annual tourists of over half a million, Udaipur is a dream destination for tourists from all over the world. Weather is moderate. The average annual rainfall is 635 mm, bulk of it occurring from middle of June to middle of September. Winter is pleasantly cool.  Udaipur  is  connected by rail to some important cities such as Delhi, Jaipur, Ajmer, Ahmedabad etc.  There are also frequent and regular bus services (deluxe and ordinary) from various cities.
