rom: john_b_french@USGS.GOV Subject: post doctoral position Post-Doctoral RESEARCH POSITION There is opportunity for post-doctoral research at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center on a project investigating the effects of methyl mercury on American kestrels. Kestrels were chosen as we know comparatively little about the toxicity of mercury in upland birds. The few data on raptors indicate somewhat less sensitivity than in waterfowl, when adult mortality is the endpoint, although thresholds for reproductive effects have yet to be established. One objective of the study is to determine the sensitivity of reproduction in American kestrels to dietary methyl mercury. In addition, we will develop information on the toxicokinetics (ADME) of methyl mercury in kestrels tissues. There is ample opportunity, and the expectation, that a post-doc will enhance the overall project with other avenues of investigation. Funding is currently in place for one year, and we expect the project to continue for at least another year. Work would begin by 1 Jan 2001, or sooner if possible. The Patuxent Wildlife Research Center is a federal research lab (of the U.S. Geological Service, Department of the Interior) located in Maryland about 12 miles N of Washington, D.C., on a 12,000 acre research wildlife refuge.
