Date: Fri, 15 Oct 1999 09:59:46 -0700 From: Charlene KingsleySubject: Post Doc in Marine Conservation Biology (sorry for cross-postings) POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW IN FISHERIES BIOLOGY/FISHERIES OCEANOGRAPHY Marine Conservation Biology Institute is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow in fisheries biology, fisheries oceanography or closely allied field, starting Fall 1999 or as soon as possible thereafter. This is a two-year position with possibility of renewal and will be based at MCBI's headquarters in Redmond WA USA. $35K + health insurance. MCBI is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization dedicated to advancing the science of marine conservation biology. The person we select will work closely with MCBI's six-person staff, including President Elliott Norse (Headquarters) and Program Director Amy Mathews-Amos (DC Office) to: 1) develop emerging issues in marine fisheries conservation. This process includes doing library research, networking with other scientists, legislators, government officials, fishermen and conservationists, and organizing and running scientific workshops. Our purpose is to uncover scientific information about under-appreciated threats to marine biodiversity and ways to protect, restore or sustainably use marine species and ecosystems, then to synthesize this information into a coherent "issue" for decision makers and the public to catalyze action; 2) publish on fisheries-related marine conservation biology issues in the peer-reviewed scientific literature and popular media; 3) serve as a spokesperson on fishery-related issues at scientific meetings, to the news media, before fishery management councils, government agencies or Congress, as needed; 4) build a compelling case for establishing a federal funding mechanism for marine conservation biology research in the USA; and 5) raise funds by writing proposals to continue this work. The successful candidate will be a Ph.D. in fisheries biology, fisheries oceanography or a closely allied field. This position requires strong knowledge of the marine realm, an appreciation for multidisciplinary, synthetic approaches, outstanding writing, quantitative skills and people skills, and the ability to work at the science/policy interface as part of a close-knit team. We especially encourage applications from people in groups that have been under-represented in the sciences. To apply, please e-mail Charlene Kingsley a message with 2 WordPerfect, MS Word or rtf attachments: 1) a 2-page resume (NOT an exhaustive CV) and 2) a cover letter of no more than 2 pages that includes names and complete contact information for 3-5 referees.
