Project Description:
The Associate will serve as the Graphics Lab Technician for the Eastern E=
arth
Science Program Team (EESPT). This EESPT is a newly formed merger of the
Eastern Geologic Mapping Team and the Climate History/Hazards Team.

Objectives of the Internship:
The Associate will provide graphical support to researchers from various
scientific disciplines. The Associate will assist in communicating scienc=
e
through the production of graphics for publications, conference presentat=
ions,
and the EESPT World Wide Web site.

Specific Tasks:
1. Communicate with scientists to design and produce graphics specific to=
 the
needs of the individual projects.
2. Implement various software programs such as Adobe Illustrator, Adobe
Photoshop, and ESRI=92s ArcView, for graphical productions
3. Make graphics and scientific data available to the public by developin=
g and
maintaining the EESPT World Wide Web site.

Work Experience Benefit(s) to Intern:
This project will give the intern the opportunity to work closely with
scientists in the process of organizing scientific data, constructing
scientific reports, and to learn important graphic and desktop publishing
software. The intern will be able to take part in the distribution of
scientific information over the Internet by assisting in the development =
of
project Web pages. A potentially large number of people in the scientific=
 and
non-scientific community will view the products of the intern.

Specific Qualifications Required:=20
Four-year degree in environmental sciences, engineering, geology, or othe=
r
related fields.
Graduate of US college or university or US citizen that studied abroad.
Must be a recent graduate of 12 months or less and able to work 40 hours =
per
week.
International students must be eligible to work in the US for up to two y=
ears
without sponsorship from the USGS or ECO.
Intern must be proficient in the use of personal computers and have exper=
ience
producing graphics with leading desktop publishing programs such as Adobe
Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Excel, and ArcView in a Macintosh=
 and
PC computing environment. The preferred applicant will be able to apply
scientific intellect and artistic inclination toward graphic layouts.

MICROFOSSILS and SEDIMENTS in CORES from the GULF OF MEXICO
Project #230
Location: Reston, VA

Deadline: February 29, 2000
Duration: two years

Project Description:
The Project involves research on microfossils and sediments in cores from=
 the
Gulf of Mexico (GOM) to obtain a record of paleoceanographic, climatic, a=
nd
environmental changes in GOM and adjacent land areas. Primary interval of
study
is the last 10,000 years.

Objectives of the Internship:
Intern will be a member of the research team and learn how to archive, ma=
nage,
and distribute a variety of scientific data in digital and graphic format=
s.
Distribution will include electronic and paper products.=20

Specific Tasks:
1. Perform simple areal statistical analysis of large data sets.
2. Product publication-quality charts, graphs, and figures representing
results
or inputs to the research project
3. Transfer data files and graphics between MAC OS, Windows 98/NT, and UN=
IX
platforms.=20
4. Manipulate and re-format files from various sources for use in mixed
platforms environment and maintain project web page.

Work Experience Benefit(s) to Intern:
Intern will learn how to obtain, organize, and utilize disparate digital =
data
and information in a large-scale environmental research program. Intern
will be
involved in data analyses and interpretation.

BASIC
and sufficient ability in generating and editing HTML, to prepare data an=
d
illustrations for project=92s internal and external website.
