The Department of Environmental Science seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning August 1, 2000 in regional environment and development issues. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to teach effectively at the undergraduate level and develop a program of scholarship involving students. Candidates could have teaching and research interests in areas such as (but not limited to): urban or industrial ecology, sustainable natural resource use, urban/regional planning or sustainable design. Experience in applying geographic information system (GIS) concepts to environmental problem solving is desirable; interest in a program with an applied and experiential emphasis is required. As an industrialized resource economy, northwest Pennsylvania provides opportunities for teaching and research activities in both built and natural environments. The College Center for Economic and Environmental Development (ceed@alleg.edu) and a departmental GIS lab offer opportunities for collaboration, teaching, and research. We seek a colleague who will engage in interdisciplinary connections within the Department and across the College, and who is committed to teaching and learning in a liberal arts context. A Ph.D. or appropriate terminal degree is required by date of appointment. Teaching load of 3 courses per semester includes a teamtaught introductory course, a sophomore course in environmental problem-solving, a junior seminar, and courses in the applicantis area of specialty. Faculty also direct senior theses and participate in a college-wide freshman/sophomore liberal studies program that emphasizes writing and speaking. Allegheny College is a highly selective liberal arts college.  Send application letter, statements of teaching and research interests and a CV by November 15, 1999 to Dr. Richard Bowden, Department of Environmental Science, Allegheny College, Meadville, PA 16335. EOE. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply. For more information visit

------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Sep 1999 08:58:13 -0500 From: Cliff Ochs Subject: Graduate Fellowship Opportunity Graduate Fellowship Opportunity: The Department of Biology of the University of Mississippi has support available, on a competitive basis, for entering Ph.D. students. Our research emphases are in ecology, evolution, and conservation biology. In addition to teaching and research assistantships, we currently have several graduate student Fellowships available for participation in the NSF-funded North Mississippi GK-12 Project. Biology Fellows will be part of a team of 14 graduate students from various disciplines that together serve as resources for K-12 teachers in local school districts, and help develop interdisciplinary activities, exercises and problems in science, with a focus on the lower Mississippi River ecosystem. Fellows will conduct their doctoral research in biology, but will spend 10-15 hours per week on the project. The annual Fellows stipend is $18,000 per year plus a tuition waiver. The project is funded for three years. Review of applications will begin in spring 2000 for prospective Fellows who can join the program in summer/fall 2000.
