> The Audubon Expedition Institute, based in Belfast, Maine, is a
collaborative effort between the National Audubon Society, the Lesley
College Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences, and the Institute for
Expedition Education.  AEI's mission is to create experiential learning
communities that inspire informed, compassionate ecological leadership and
foster broad integrated consideration of the bioregions visited-cultural,
ecological, historical, and political. By participating in collaborative
decision-making about their own educational experience, graduates become
passionate advocates for the natural world and offer a unique perspective to
the work of creating a sustainable society.

> AEI functions with the support of the Audubon's education division,
sanctuary department, and research staff.  Lesley College, a leader in the
field of alternative education, provides academic support and accreditation
for undergraduate and graduate programs offered through AEI.  AEI is
Lesley's environmental education and environmental studies program and is
accredited as such. The field program consists of four independent learning
communities, each with about 18 students and three faculty members.

> The Position
>
> The Executive Director provides organizational leadership to carry the
vision for the Audubon Expedition Institute and articulate a commitment and
passion for the philosophies and values of the organization.  With the
requisite skills and experience, the Executive Director will be responsible
for ensuring the viability and effectiveness of the organization on
administrative, academic, legal, philosophic, and fiscal levels.  In
academic year 1999-2000, the total number of staff is 13; the total number
of faculty is 15-17; and the organization's operating budget is $1,500,000.

> Base salary compensation for this opportunity is $70,000.  Required
qualifications include:

>  Entrepreneurial spirit

>  Working knowledge of fundraising techniques
>  Commitment to the philosophy and practice of non-traditional
education
>  Academic understanding of experientially based, environmental
education
>  Strategic planning skills and experience
