Subject: National-level Coordinator Needed for Community-based
Forest Management Project

The constitutional provision of village forests, a
forest patch allocated to each village for meeting its
biomass needs, has not been implemented in most places
in India. We believe that the effective implementation
of village forests has tremendous potential for
improving forest management at the village level in
India. We have initiated a program of advocacy for the
correct implementation of the village forest
provision, based on experiences in community and joint
forest management in the states of Orissa, Andhra
Pradesh, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.

Our NGO, Vrikshamitra, requires a national-level
coordinator who would be in charge of networking and
advocacy related to the implementation of the village
forest provision in the Indian Forest Act. The person
will be expected to work closely with other members of
Vrikshamitra and network with government bodies, local
groups, scientists and relevant NGOs in India. Travel
to remote locations would be required from time to
time but most of the work would be based in Delhi.

Approximately ten days a month would be required from
the person. Time commitment of a minimum of two years
is needed.
