1. More Than 800 Solar Homes to Be Open for US Tour

WASHINGTON, October 4, 2001 - More than 800 homes in 43 states and the
District of Columbia that are powered by the sun will be open to tours
on October 13th to showcase how this clean, renewable energy is being
put to use in today's homes. The tour is part of the US Department of
Energy's "Energy Awareness Month" efforts.

"A visit to see the practical, everyday use of solar power shows
families how they can incorporate these technologies in their homes,"
said Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham. "Renewable energy use is a
key component to President Bush's National Energy Policy. Diversifying
resources and increasing the use of solar power meets the President's
goals of conserving energy, lowering utility bills and strengthening
America's energy security."

Information on tours in your state is available from DOE's Energy
Efficiency and Renewable Energy Clearinghouse at 800-DOE-3732.

International Solar Energy Projects
Moving towards Sustainability and Justice

Chris Keavney in Peru and
Sajed Kamal in Bangladesh

Two different approaches to the diffusion of solar energy
internationally will be presented. Chris Keavney will relate his
experiences from five years with the Maryknoll mission in rural
communities of Peru advancing solar cooking and heating systems.

We will, also, hear from BASEA Board Member, Sajed Kamal, a specialist
in alternative energy and appropriate technology, who will present his
work in Bangladesh in a large-scale solar project.

Refreshments served.

3. Newton Solar Home Tour, Saturday October 13, 2001 10 am - 2 pm

The Green Decade Coalition/Newton will conduct a guided tour of a
small sample of Newton's solar energy installations. Come along,
meet your neighbors and learn about Newton's solar projects, such as,
the Solar Survey, the Newton Solar Fund, and the Kyoto Project.

The Newton Tour will meet at 10am and depart from the Newton Community
Services Center, 492 Waltham Street, West Newton. Bring a bag lunch.
Beverages will be provided.

Persons on the Newton Tour will receive a packet of valuable
information from the sponsors of the tour, supplied from solar energy
associations, businesses, and others. Tickets cost $10.- in advance
and $12.- at the door. Funds raised will go toward adding solar
collectors to the roof of the Newton Community Services Center.

The Green Decade Coaltion <http://www.greendecade.org> is part of the
SUNERGY Newton Million Solar Roofs Partnership
.

Solar energy is a free, non-polluting energy resource that
can be used in buildings for light, heat, and power. Solar
collector panels can convert sunlight into thermal energy
for space heating and hot water and into electricity for
running fans, pumps, appliances, or for supplying the
utility grid with electricity in a distributed generation
system. In fact, net metering regulations allow
homeowners to run their meter backwards and be paid
by the electric company for the electricity they feed
back into the system.

Solar heating and hot water can be economical, too.
Thermal systems typically displace over a gallon of oil
per square foot of collector area per year. We should
note that nobody goes to war over sunlight. And the
more solar energy we use, the less we will have to fight
over imported oil.

Nationally the tour is sponsored by the American Solar
Energy Association, Washington, D.C., and regionally
by the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association,
Greenfield, MA,
