Subject: LEAP2000: A New Tool for Sustainable Energy Analysis

[ The following text is in the "iso-8859-1" character set. ]
[ Your display is set for the "US-ASCII" character set. ]
[ Some characters may be displayed incorrectly. ]

Hello,

As someone who has previously expressed interest in LEAP -- the Long-range
Energy Alternatives Planning software system -- we wanted to let you know
that LEAP2000, the new Windows-based version of the software, is now
available. The software has been created as part of a 3 year initiative led
by the <http://www.seib.org/> Boston Center of the Stockholm Environment
Institute at <http://www.tellus.org/> Tellus Institute in collaboration
with institutions from both industrialized and developing countries
(including <http://www.edr.uct.ac.za/> EDRC, <http://www.enda.sn/> ENDA,
ETC <http://www.etcint.org/> and
<http://www.bariloche.com.ar/fb/english/idee/description-energy.html> IDEE).
The initiative has been funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign
Affairs (
<http://www.bz.minbuza.nl/english/Content.asp?Key=405055&Pad=257568> DGIS).

LEAP2000 adds powerful new databases, analytical capabilities, and usability
features to the approach pioneered in earlier versions. Like earlier
versions, LEAP2000 is an integrated, end-use oriented, accounting tool for
studying energy and environmental scenarios. However, the new version is
very different from its predecessors. It emphasizes the visual display and
editing of data to make the system as simple, intuitive and compelling to
use as possible. For example, energy demand analyses are displayed and
edited on a hierarchical tree that works much like the Explorer tool in
Microsoft Windows, while energy supply systems are displayed and edited in a
"Reference Energy System" flow diagram. Both data and results are displayed
instantly on configurable charts.

LEAP2000 is widely applicable. Its uses include integrated energy planning,
greenhouse gas mitigation studies, demand and supply forecasting and
economic cost-benefit analysis of energy policies and measures. It can be
applied in international, national, and local applications, including
studies of both industrialized and developing country energy systems.

Key LEAP2000 features include:

*	New Methodological Options: These include useful energy demand
analysis, cost-based dispatch of electric generation systems, endogenous
electric sector capacity expansion, improved cost-benefit analyses, and
better representation of industrial cogeneration.

*	Expression-Based Modeling:  LEAP2000 borrows a technique made
popular in spreadsheets: the ability to specify data and to create powerful
models using standard mathematical formulae.

*	TED: A new Technology and Environmental Database provides extensive
information on the technical characteristics, costs and environmental
impacts of a wide range of energy technologies. TED's web-based information
pages review technology availability, appropriateness, cost-effectiveness
and key environmental issues. TED can be used as a standalone database, or
linked to LEAP to calculate the emissions profiles of energy scenarios.

*	Powerful Scenario Management: LEAP2000 lets you create integrated
scenarios by combining the data and assumptions of individual policy
measures.

*	Links to Spreadsheets: LEAP2000 can act as an open framework for
organizing and integrating the results of separate modeling efforts, through
dynamic links to Microsoft Excel spreadsheets.

*	Software Wizards: These greatly simplify using the system, taking
users step-by-step though the more complex analytical tasks.

*	Internet Options: LEAP2000 takes advantage of (but does not require)
an Internet connection, with features such as automatic software updates,
web-based technical support and Internet-based sharing of data sets.

*	Documentation: LEAP2000 allows to write and store notes to document
your work and make your assumptions clear to others.

*	Backwards Compatibility: Users of older versions of LEAP can import
their data into the new version (currently demand data only).

You can find out more information about LEAP by visiting the LEAP web site
at <http://www.seib.org/> http://www.seib.org. From there you can get an
<http://www.seib.org/leap/introduction.html> introduction to LEAP2000, read
LEAP2000's <http://www.seib.org/leap/webhelp/index.html> User Guide and
<http://www.seib.org/leap/trainingexercises.pdf> Training Exercises,
<http://www.seib.org/leap/leap2000req.html> download an evaluation version
of the system for free, or
<http://shareit1.element5.com/programs.html?productid=140851&language=Englis
h> order a copy of the evaluation version on CD-ROM for a charge of $40.
The evaluation version is a fully working copy with only the "Save" and "New
Area" features disabled. The web site also provides information on
<http://www.seib.org/leap/licensing.html> how to license the fully enabled
version of the system. Licenses to use the software are available at no
charge to qualified non-profit organizations based in developing countries.

Hardware/Software Requirements: LEAP2000 requires a 200 Mhz or faster
Pentium PC with a minimum of 32 MB of RAM (64 MB suggested), Microsoft
Windows 95 or later, and Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or later.

We hope you will take the opportunity to visit the LEAP web site and
download the new software. We think you will find it a "great LEAP
forward"! We look forward to hearing your comments!
