The Renewable Energy Policy Project is pleased to announce the release
of Environmental Principles for Biomass Energy in the South. The
extensive set of principles provides the perspective of a group of
Southern environmentalists on issues that should be addressed in order
to promote the environmental sustainability of biomass energy. The
principles include cross-cutting principles, as well as those specific
to biomass feedstocks and technologies.

They are available at

These principles provide guidance to the biomass industry on the
perspectives of the Southern environmental community. Just as
important, REPP hopes this serves as a resource for other
environmentalists attempting to understand what is perhaps the most
complex energy source available.

The principles are the result of extensive analysis and discussion. The
Southern Alliance for Clean Energy (SACE) organized two 2-day meetings
where issues were identified, developed and addressed with appropriate
principles. The final product would not have been possible without the
hard work of SACE in bringing together a diverse array of Southern
environmentalists to talk pragmatically about biomass. REPP provided
analysis and background information to inform each step of the process,
and worked closely with SACE to ensure that the process moved forward
amid an array of complex environmental issues.

Antares Group, Gregg Morris and Tom Miles provided key pieces data and
several case studies. Oregon-based consultant Marc Smiley ably
facilitated the meetings. Finally, Mark MacLeod of Environmental
Defense in Texas was very helpful in providing the groups with the
perspective of an environmentalist who has already thought deeply about
biomass^Ņ relationship to clean energy policy.

Funding for this effort came from the Public Power Institute and the
Energy Foundation.
