The successful applicant will teach courses, conduct research and direct undergraduate and graduate research in environmental science. QUALIFICATIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES: A completed Ph.D. degree in a relevant field. Post-doctoral experience preferred and teaching experience required. Potential teaching responsibilities include: introductory and core courses in environmental science, development of a course in the applicants area of specialization as well as a junior-level laboratory course. Research experience is required in one or more of the following areas as applied to wetlands: biogeochemistry, plant ecology, macroinvertebrate ecology, GIS applications, bioremediation, restoration or management. The candidate should have a broad scholarly background and must demonstrate the ability to include students in research and join with a multidisciplinary faculty to enrich the development of environmental studies. Demonstrated experience working with diverse students and faculty preferred. UNIVERSITY: Western Washington University is a comprehensive state university of over 10,000 students located between Seattle and Vancouver, B.C. Situated on a beautiful campus overlooking Bellingham Bay, the University includes six colleges, a graduate school, and a number of teaching and research centers and institutes. COLLEGE: Huxley College, founded in 1968, takes an interdisciplinary approach to the broad field of environmental studies. Courses range through environmental toxicology and chemistry, ecology, environmental policy, geography and planning, and environmental education. The College includes two research institutes, Watershed Studies and Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, a GIS laboratory and a map library. Huxley course work is mostly offered at the junior, senior and graduate levels. Undergraduate programs center on four academic majors: environmental science, planning and environmental policy, environmental education and geography. Graduate studies include M.S. degrees in Environmental Science, and in Geography, and cooperative graduate programs with other units. There are 21 faculty, 24 affiliated faculty from other units of the university, and nine adjunct faculty. Total enrollment is currently over 500, including 48 graduate students. Ernest" Subject: Faculty position: Plant Ecologist Plant Ecologist CONTRACT TYPE: The Department of Biological Sciences, Central Washington University invites applications for a full-time 9-month academic appointment (three academic quarters per year), tenure-track position. Appointment will begin September 16, 2000. RESPONSIBILITIES: The candidate should be prepared to teach plant ecology and/or general ecology as well as introductory botany for majors or non-majors. In addition, the candidate may be able to offer courses in their particular specialty. Normal teaching load is two courses with lab each quarter (an average of 12 contact hours); small class sizes allow for a variety of teaching approaches. Research involving undergraduates or masters students is expected; continued scholarly activity is required. QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will have a broad academic background in biology and a Ph.D. involving research on a plant ecological problem. Prior teaching experience is preferred. A commitment to excellence in teaching and the development of a research program suitable for the involvement of students are essential. No particular sub-specialties of plant ecology are excluded. We are especially interested in candidates who will contribute ecological approaches currently lacking from the department (e.g., molecular ecology, ecosystem dynamics, and landscape or restoration ecology, among other possibilities) and who could work on questions related to Pacific Northwest plants, vegetation, communities, or ecosystems.
