      BACKGROUND

Forest 2000 is the sixth edition of the biennial event
traditionally directed by the Brazilian environmental and forest
sectors, counting on the participation of technicians, politicians
and business people of national and international status. We have
proudly welcomed over 7,850 participants, including 1,230 speakers
with delegations representative of over 41 countries, they include
many important speakers, researchers, business leaders and
government authorities related to sustainable development, forest
resources and the environment. More than 1,000 exhibitors have
attended to discuss and present a wide range of products and
      services.

The previous international exhibitions received participation from
both federal and state environmental and forest entities as well as
many private companies especially in the area of reforestation,
paper and wood production, cellulose, energy, mining and steel.
More than 1000 exhibitors have presented their products and
services at the five previous events of FOREST'90 (Manaus),
FOREST'92 (Rio de Janeiro), FOREST'94 (Porto Alegre), FOREST'96
(Belo Horizonte) and FOREST´99 (Curitiba). The exhibition is open
to the public and has attracted over 20,000 visitors which
certifies the interest raised by the environmental forest projects
carried out in Brazil and through out the world.

      OBJECTIVES

Forests 2000 has the following principal objectives:

                                             o

Promote international discussion about sustainable forest
development in Brazil and around the world focusing on the
      technical, political and economical implications.

                                             o

Analyze political and legislative forest directives at regional,
      national and international levels.

                                             o

Promote technical/scientific discussion with the participation of
professors, researchers and specialists from all over the world on
the understanding of forest ecosystems and their natural resources.

                                             o

Present technological advancements, and analyze, from a business
point of view, the national and international trends, mechanisms
related to industrialization and commercialization of forest
products, especially wood, paper, cellulose and energy.

                                             o

Present, through an international exhibition, the environmental and
forest developments reached in different ecosystems both in Brazil
      & around the world.

      DATE & LOCATION

FOREST 2000 will be held from the 23-26 October 2000 in Porto
Seguro Convention Center in the state of Bahia, the same place that
has presented the official ceremonies for the 500 Years of the
Discovery of Brazil, which occurred on 22 April 1500. This region
of Southern Bahia, where Porto Seguro is located, has intense
activities in the production of paper, wood and cellulose actions,
which need to focus on sustainable development. The region is
especially valued for it Atlantic forests, as well as other very
      important ecosystems.

      GOVERNMENT & BUSINESS PARTICIPATION

The five previous FOREST Congresses have depended strongly on
participation from government authorities, business leaders,
technicians, specialists, professors and researchers related to
reforestation, forest management, engineering, agriculture and
sustainable development. Academics are represented by universities
and research centers, including professors and analysts from the
environmental and forestry areas. Companies represent other
important sectors from paper, cellulose, wood, energy, steel,
metallurgy, mining as well as chemicals and petrochemicals.

Many professionals will take part in the technical, political and
business sectors of FOREST 2000. Professionals specializing in
forestry and sustainable development are expected to attend,
focusing on issues such as forestry engineering, reforestation,
agronomy, biology and geo-sciences as well as those related to
      forestry/environment and sustainable development.

It is important to remember the participation of Non Governmental
Organizations (NGO's), who have traditionally participated in all
      previous of FOREST Congresses.
