Responding to the needs of the industry, the research community and every individual's right to geospatial information, this year again, Map India aims to provide a platform for the convergence, sharing and use of technologies and experiences in the geospatial domain. Map India 2004 remains dedicated to the mission of fostering the use and spread of geospatial content among communities. Theme: Geospatial Democracy 'Geospatial Information for the people, of the people and by the people' Every human being has some 'geospatial reference' by birth. Every citizen identifies oneself with a 'geographic boundary' to develop 'geospatial possessiveness'. Every nation needs 'geospatial information' in some manner to perform efficiently. The conference aims at understanding better, how geo-informatics affects the relationship among institutions, government agencies, civil societies and research groups. Map India 2004 shall deliberate on redefining roles of various bodies that constitute democracy within the information domain. Keynote Sessions: 01 Geospatial Democracy Democracy has its own dimensions political, economic and social dimensions and in contemporary context another equally important dimension is the ^Ñinformation democracy^Ò. Geographical information holds the key to unlocking the nation^Òs full capacity and helps it to fulfill its democratic commitments. 02 Changing Role of National Mapping Organisations Geographic information producing organisations in this region of the world have generally concentrated on data generation, storage and maintenance, often ending up finding reasons for not distributing the data. It is a felt need to re-think the roles, mandates and mechanisms of functioning for every National Mapping Organisation (NMO). This is aimed at discussion on abler 'product policies', better 'market performance techniques' and revamping their public image. 03 Technology Trends The session shall have discussions and knowledge-sharing on the latest updates and trends in Geographic Information Systems, Remote Sensing and all related technologies. Various stakeholders from the industry, the government, the academia and end users shall converge onto one platform for discussions and critical evaluation. Seminars: 01 E- Governance Information Technology has emerged as an inevitable phenomenon influencing every walk of life in all sections of society. E-Governance is one such crucial IT driven initiative that can allow the government to make information easily available, transparent and in an interactive form. Map India 2004 proposes to have one-day seminar on e-governance, aiming at providing the opportunity to all relevant stakeholders to discuss, brainstorm and share information about the effective implementation of this technology. 02. Land Information System Land Information Systems is a vibrant concept that encompasses not just making maps but also making intelligent maps that can not only store data but also assist in analysis and decision support. The concept is not new in India but has not gained much ground due to various institutional and political hurdles. Map India 2004 proposes to have a one-day seminar on LIS to deliberate in detail the need to modernize the cadastral techniques and to update the cadastral records. 03 Infrastructure Development Infrastructure forms the lifeline of any society. Proper administration and growth of any region is not possible in modern times without adequate development of infrastructure. Geo-informatics has emerged as a crucial and rational tool in areas involving heavy research, analysis and simulations by Municipalities, development authorities and planning departments. Map India 2004 has an objective to explore the latest, the most interesting, the best and the varied instances of use of this powerful platform of geo-informatics in a one day dedicated seminar on 'Infrastructure Development'. 04 Education and Curriculum Development Even though geospatial technologies like Remote Sensing, GIS, Photogrammetry and GPS are being used for various applications by planners, decision makers, academicians and researchers, trained manpower in these technologies is not sufficient. A one-day seminar on Education and Curriculum Development is proposed with special reference to e-Learning at Map India 2004 in collaboration with UNIGIS. Workshops 01 Mapping the Neighbourhood Mapping starts from a desire to explore, discover and interpret your discovery and convert it into knowledge. Our association with maps is limited to some moments of necessity. The knowledge of our surroundings alternatively develops through our daily interaction with an area. A simple mapping exercise, 'Mapping the Neighbourhood' is a unique opportunity by which one can reverse conventional learning processes. 02 Interoperability Interoperability has become a topic of discussion in most GIS circles, for sharing and exchange of information and process in distributed computing environments. The complexity of geographic information and processing raises the fundamental issues related to the incompatibility of representations, structures, and semantics that need to be addressed to achieve geographic information interoperation. In order to discuss these issues, related to interoperability in GIS, a workshop is being organized during Map India 2004. 03 Managing Large Geodatabases The workshop aims to discuss recent technological advances in this respect and put forth the pros and cons attached with DBMS support. This workshop will also review the role of DBMS for imagery applications, and discusses salient aspects of the DBMS architecture itself. Technical Sessions * Water Resources * Health * Disaster Management * Landuse / Landcover * Coastal Zone Management * Agriculture * Internet GIS * Forestry * Urban Planning * Rural Development Panel Discussions 01 Geographic Information Policy: Should we have one? 02 Indian Remote Sensing Programme: Has it Delivered? 03 Survey of India: What Next? User Meetings These user meeting shall provide an opportunity for the geographic information and technology providers to interact face to face with their customers an users. 01 Survey of India 02 Census of India 03. National Remote Sensing Agency Social Programmes 01 Run for Geospatial Democracy 02 Kavi Sammellan (Poet^Òs Convention) 03 Exhibitor Reception 04. Gala Dinner Reception Exhibition Map India 2004 will provide an opportunity for updating on your existing users with new advancements, solutions and services. It provides you with a cost-effective marketing channel that allows you to reach both the GIS-aware decision-maker and the business manager - who may not even be aware of GIS but recognize the benefits to be gained from spatial information management. We will try to provide the exhibitors with ample opportunities and qualified prospects. All the key issues facing these diverse markets will be covered through the comprehensive conference programme and demonstrations running on the show floor.
