Rs 91 1akh project to restore lake begins |
The restoration and development works have been taken up under the ongoing Asian
Development Bank funded Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development Project. The proposed works are finalised in consultation with Mysore Jala Samrakshana Okkuta (MJSO) which was formed to guide the lake
development works in Mysore.
The estimated cost of the
proposed works is Rs 91 lakh. The entire project cost is given as grant by the State
government to the University of Mysore. The nodal government agency for the proposed works is Karnataka Urban
Infrastructure. Development and Finance Corporation while
implementing agency is University of Mysore. Vice-Chancellor Prof S N Hegde today performed the
guddali puja for the project on the banks of the lake. He said the works would be be completed in ten months and the lake would be developed as an eco-tourism project. Dalal Consultants and Engineers Limited is the design and supervision consultant for the project.
Under the project, all weeds in the water spread area of the lake will be removed and
disposed. Desilting will be done in the highly silted parts of the lake. Earthen blinds and islands will be formed using the
desilted earth and surplus silt will be disposed, according to the plan. Since the lake was polluted due to inflow of sewage from the residential areas, the
project will take steps to prevent entry of sewage into the lake.
The existing bund on the southern side was in need of development and the project has chalked out a plan to develop the bunds. The bund will be widened and seating
arrangement for the public will be made at the blind portion with lighting facility.
Under the development of the lake, a new bund as a walk- s way of visitors will be formed t on the western side of the lake i with lighting facility.
With the blocks in feeder canal, excavation will be done in Deewan Purnaiah Canal for making a base flow channel for the length of six
kms. The project also envisages to provide drinking water facility for visitors and dustbins will be pro- vided at suitable locations of the lake premises.
As many parts of the lake boundary do not have fencing, barbed wire fencing will be pro- vided. Chain link fencing will be established near the front en- trance of the lake.
Other works under the project are suitable vehicle parking area for visitor's vehicle and
compacted aggregate layers will be provided on parking area.
A public toilet will be also constructed in the lake premises for convenience of visitors.
Kukkarahalli lake is talked about for its beautiful location and the picturesque sunsets upon its bank. Thanks to the concern of the citizens of Mysore who are responsible for saving the lake this far from
urbanisation. The lake is providing the much needed lung-space for the city.
