Subject: Latest publications from IDRC
*************************************************************************
Hello to you all,

I am writing to announce three new books. IDRC Books has just published :

1- For Hunger-proof Cities. Sustainable Urban Food Systems.
Edited by Mustafa Koc, Rod MacRae, Luc A. Mougeot, and Jennifer Welsh
ISBN 0-88936-882-1, 252 p., $35 CAD
http://www.idrc.ca/books/882.html

For Hunger-proof Cities is the first book to fully examine food security
from an urban perspective. It examines existing local food systems and
ways to improve the availability and accessibility of food for city
dwellers.
It looks at methods to improve community-supported agriculture and
cooperation between urban and rural populations. It explores what existing
marketing and distribution structures can do to improve accessibility and
what the emerging forms of food-distribution systems are, and how they can
contribute to alleviating hunger in the cities. Finally, the book discusses
the
underlying structures that create poverty and inequality and examines the
role of emergency food systems, such as food banks.

2-Indonesia's Fires and Haze
The Cost of Catastrophe
edited by David Glover and Timothy Jessup
IDRC/ISEAS 1999, ISBN 0-88936-901-1, $25
ca. 200 pp., 6" x 9", paperback
http://www.idrc.ca/books/901.html

>From September to November of 1997, raging fires in Indonesia pumped
enough smoke into the air to blanket the entire region in haze, reaching
as
far north as southern Thailand and the Philippines, with Malaysia and
Singapore being particularly affected.

This book conservatively assesses the damage at US $4.5 billion, more
than the Exxon Valdez oil spill and India's Bhopal chemical spill
combined. It looks at the causes of the fires, the physical damages that
resulted, and their effects on heath, industrial production, and tourism,
among others. It explains the methods used to assign a monetary value to
the
damages and recommends measures that must be taken to prevent a
recurrence of this horrific event.

villes

This book describes the valuable contribution that urban agriculture is
making to food security and urban sanitation in the cities of West and
Central. It also presents a strategy for launching a multistakeholder
network
on urban agriculture, and does so with input and support from producers;
NGOs; national, regional, and international research institutions; donors;
and policymakers and government officials at both the municipal and
national levels.
